Meet Our Team

We pride ourselves on our service being delivered by a team of compassionate, knowledgeable and skilled individuals.

Steve Kelly

Veterinarian & Practice Owner (B.V.Sc.)

Steve graduated from the University of Queensland in 1981. He worked at various locations within rural Australia, including three years as a flying vet in the Kimberleys & Territory. Since then, Steve has owned and operated vet surgeries in Redland Bay, Esk and now in the South Burnett since 2004.

Steve enjoys working on all animals but has a particular passion for horses & cattle.

In his spare time, you'll find him out fishing or Clay Target Shooting!

Angela Cannell

Veterinarian (B.V.Sc.)

Angela was born & bred on the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland.  Since graduating from JCU in 2014, she has worked in mixed and small animal practices in South East Qld.

Angela enjoys all areas of mixed practice and particularly enjoys being able to help owners and their animals.

On 'days off' Ange enjoys spending time with family and friends, and travelling.

Sophia Gowardman

Veterinarian (B.V.Sc.)

Sophia grew up in Tasmania and moved up to Queensland in 2015 to start studying veterinary science. Sophia graduated from James Cook University in 2020 and decided that Queensland’s warm weather was a reason to stick around.  Sophia enjoys all aspects of mixed practice but has a particular interest in disease investigation, calf rearing and small animal medicine.

On ‘days off’ she likes to drink wine, go hiking and spend time with family and friends.

Erika Winter

Veterinary Nurse (Cert 4 Veterinary Nursing)

Erika joined our team at Wooroolin Veterinary Services in January 2018.  Having lived in the rural Kingaroy area all her life, she has a passion for animals and has completed her Cert 4 in Veterinary Nursing.

Erika enjoys working with our clients to help provide the best care for their pets.

'Days off' for Erika are spent with family and friends as well as her faithful dog 'Bruno'.  Erika also enjoys reading and travelling and has had the opportunity to visit Europe, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Lord Howe & Norfolk Islands.

Fiona Steele

Veterinary Nurse (Cert 4 Veterinary Nursing)

Fiona joined us in 2016 as Veterinary Nurse at our Wooroolin Clinic.  Growing up on cattle and sheep properties in far western Queensland nurtured a passion for animals during her early days.  Many hours were spent on her horse mustering and droving cattle, and back at home with a variety of dogs and cats!

Since completing her Cert 4 in Veterinary Nursing, Fiona has undertaken extra studies to gain entrance to complete a Veterinary Science degree at JCU in Townsville.  We are fortunate to have Fiona in our Clinics during her Uni breaks!

Alexandra Zabel

Veterinary Nurse (Certificate 4 Veterinary Nurse)

Alex has recently moved to the South Burnett from the Lockyer Valley, Qld.

She originally completed study to become a Biosecurity Officer with an interest in livestock and disease investigation. Vet nursing was the path she took to begin gaining experience in the animal industry and has remained her career of choice ever since. Alex has worked in several clinics in South East Queensland, enjoying all aspects of the job, particularly surgical nursing.

Interests for Alex include working with her husband on their cattle property, horse riding, cooking and sport/fitness.

Alex Kelly

Veterinary Nurse (Cert 2 Veterinary Nursing)

Alex grew up trailing Dad (Steve) around the vet surgeries, and riding her ponies at home. This lead to some great opportunities and much time spent travelling around Australia and the world working in the equine and veterinary nursing industries.

Having settled back into the local area, she is enjoying vet nursing once again and says one of the highlights is the 'never quite knowing what will walk through the door today.'

Alex's hobbies include planning the next travel adventure for her family - and taking her Basset Hound to the beach!

Makala Bool

Veterinary Nurse

Makala grew up on a farm in the South Burnett. Having always been passionate about all types of animals and their care, Vet Nursing was an obvious career choice!

Makala is currently completing her Cert IV in Veterinary Nursing and when she has time off from study, she enjoys time with her horses mustering and competing.

Ally Toonen

Veterinary Nurse (Cert 4 Veterinary Nursing)

Hi I'm Ally, I have a lot of family in the South Burnett and lived here when I was younger!  I have just recently moved back from Brisbane, after completing my Cert 4 in Veterinary Nursing at Tafe Qld.

I have always enjoyed travelling and camping, especially when I can bring my dogs along.

What makes me really happy about Veterinary Nursing is seeing really sick or unwell animals leaving our doors so much happier and healthier.

Louise Cain

Veterinary Nurse

Louise was born and bred in outback Qld, in a small town call Jundah, 200 klms south of Longreach.  From a very young age she had a passion about caring and helping any abandoned or injured animal that came her way.

In 2010 Louise started work as a Veterinary Nurse, and loves every minute of her job.   Louise says that ‘one day is never the same as the next’.

Her days are full, and when she’s not in the Clinic, she’s looking after a variety of animals at home, and raising 3 young boys of her own!

Louise is currently completing her Cert 4 in Veterinary Nursing.

Madison Wintour

Veterinary Nurse

Madi is local girl who has recently moved back to the south Burnett, after 3 years of governessing on cattle properties in Central Queensland.  Madi is keen to further her studies in veterinary nursing, and expand her knowledge of all animals great and small!

In her spare time Madi enjoys riding & competing her horses, playing with her rescue dog Narla, and adventuring in the great outdoors with her partner and friends.

Madi is currently completing her Cert 4 in Veterinary Nursing.

Brianna Hedges

Veterinary Nurse

Bri grew up in Goomeri, and has gained a lot of valuable life experience working her way around properties in Qld, NSW and NT.

On weekends she loves to fish, camp, and cook as well as travelling and exploring new places.

Bri has an absolute passion for animals, and loves to spoil her own dogs.

Bri is currently working towards her Cert 4 in Veterinary Nursing.

Wendy Kelly

Veterinary Practice Manager

Growing up in Brisbane, Wendy kicked off a career in realestate until a horse with colic and a call to the local vet (namely Steve!) introduced her to the veterinary industry - she has been part of the Veterinary practice team for over 30 years now.

Wendy looks after all the financials and admins of the surgery and keeps our team full of smiles.

Hobbies include enjoying the beach with her terriers and spoiling her new granddaughter.
